A historical blogger from Ahmedabad’s Isanpur area, who has more than 30 criminal cases against him, was shot in the leg by Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sharad Singhal after he attacked senior police officials with a knife during his interrogation on Wednesday, police said on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Kaleem, was arrested by the Crime Branch following specific information that he was in possession of illegal weapons, police said. Four weapons were allegedly recovered from him.

According to police, Kaleem turned violent during interrogation and assaulted the officers. He allegedly took out a hidden knife and attacked the Joint Commissioner of Police, causing blunt force injuries.

The officer fired his service weapon in self-defense during the ensuing scuffle, striking the defendant in the leg and neutralizing the threat, police said. The injured officer and the accused were transferred to receive medical treatment.

Police said Kaleem had a criminal record of more than 30 serious crimes. Further investigations are underway.
