Trinamool Congress MP Sayoni Ghosh on Thursday claimed that an inspection by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) revealed the “truth” behind the viral ownership controversy that dragged her and senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee into a political storm over alleged links to a flat in Kolkata.

The TMC member said the similarity in names sparked speculation and sparked what she described as a politically motivated smear campaign against her and Banerjee.

“Satyamev Jayate!” Ghosh wrote while sharing details of the inspection.

What did Sayoni Ghosh claim?

According to Ghosh, the couple residing in the apartment informed KMC officials that they had jointly purchased the apartment about three years ago and had provided valid ownership documents during the verification process.

She added that the family fully cooperated with civil authorities and local police officials during the search.

The couple also expressed disappointment at the public attention and social media speculation that has put them – as well as Trinamool politicians with similar names – under the microscope, Ghosh said.

“They said it was pure coincidence,” Ghosh wrote in her letter

The TMC member alleged that the controversy escalated into an “unnecessary media trial” and an online harassment campaign.

“The unnecessary media trial and subsequent harassment on social media platforms was a clear case of vendetta politics carried out against politicians,” she said, alleging that the controversy was aimed at tarnishing their “personal and professional image.”

The post came a day after Ghosh publicly denied allegations that she jointly owns the property with Abhishek Banerjee. She then described the allegations as “fake news”, urged people to check her election certificate and warned of legal action against those spreading misinformation.

How did the dispute start?

The controversy emerged amid a broader political standoff over alleged unauthorized constructions linked to leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Senior BJP leaders have alleged that several TMC functionaries and leaders own multiple properties, with Banerjee’s name also cropping up during political attacks.

The problem worsened after Kolkata Municipal Corporation notices related to some properties became public, sparking online speculation about alleged links between the address and TMC leaders due to identical names.

The Trinamool Congress had earlier accused the BJP of orchestrating a “smear campaign” by informally circulating civil notices and pushing “fabricated” narratives across social media and parts of the media.

Sayuni was already in the spotlight due to the threat of execution

The latest controversy has emerged even as Ghosh remains in the news over an alleged death threat issued by a BJP leader from Uttar Pradesh.

Ghosh said on Tuesday that she had received an “open death threat” after Secunderabad Nagar Palika chief and BJP leader Pradeep Dixit announced… $1 crore reward for whoever “cuts off her head”.

The BJP leader’s remarks were linked to a controversial 2015 social media post from Ghosh’s account that had resurfaced during previous election campaigns. Ghosh has consistently maintained that her account had been hacked at that time and that the post was uploaded by hackers.
