A 44-year-old woman in Noida was allegedly cheated $A man she met through a matrimonial website about two months ago got Rs 9.33 lakh, police said on Sunday.

According to police, the man allegedly claimed to be a doctor who owned a 3-bedroom apartment in Dallas, US, and promised to marry the woman. He also allegedly offered to help her son study abroad after her pending divorce proceedings in India were concluded.
On June 23, in a police complaint, the woman, a divorced mother residing in Sector 36, stated that after she called him in April, they started talking on the phone.

It was reported that he claimed during a phone conversation that he was going through a difficult time financially. “I helped him by selling my gold jewelry because I didn’t have any cash. Finally, he asked for it $Another 3 lakh, so I decided to approach the police station,” she said in the FIR, seen by HT.
She asked the police to verify the man’s authenticity, adding: “If he is real, I would like to meet him and continue with the marriage. But if he has a criminal background, I want the money back.”
Between April and June, the woman was transferred, said Vijay Singh Rana, SHO, Cyber Crime Branch, Noida $9.33 lakh in multiple transactions. “We have registered a case and efforts are on to trace the money.”
“The woman was still insisting on additional transportation $3 lakh, thinking the man was real. “However, we advised her not to pay for the scam,” the SHO added.
The Cyber Crime Branch police have registered a case on charges of cheating and cheating by impersonation under BNS, along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act, against the unidentified suspect.
