A 23-year-old intern at Goa Medical College was found dead on Dona Paula beach in Panaji on Wednesday evening, and initial investigations suggest it is a case of suicide, police said.

Local residents found the trainee doctor, who hails from Kerala, on a Hawaiian beach and informed the police.
A police officer, requesting anonymity, said: “The post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday after her family arrived from Kerala. Doctors have reserved the cause of death until the viscera are analysed.”

The officer said an autopsy found a needle wound on her left arm. He added that the police suspect that the student died by suicide, as empty vials containing a drug and a muscle relaxant were found next to her body.
Goa Medical College officials said they would provide all possible assistance to the family.
“Last night, the body of one of our trainees, who hails from Kerala, was found in Dona Paula by the police and was taken to Goa Medical College. She was about to complete her internship in the next two days and this unfortunate incident happened,” said Rajesh Patil, Medical Superintendent, Goa Medical College.

“The police are investigating the case and the circumstances surrounding her death. She did not have any major problems. In the medical college we have a system of mentors and mentees, where every student is given a mentor as a guide, especially students from outside Goa. Counseling is given twice a week and if there are any signs of distress, their parents are contacted,” he added.
The trainee was scheduled to return to her home, where her parents, both doctors, live. The source added that the body was handed over to its family after completing the official procedures.
