A pregnant woman was allegedly beaten and killed by her husband in Surguja district of Chhattisgarh last week over an argument. The accused inserted a saw blade into the woman’s genitals, news agency PTI reported, citing police and health officials.

The brutal incident took place last week on Thursday, May 14, in Bhathikala village in Chhattisgarh, within the limits of Manipur Police Station. The victim was 23.
According to a police official, the couple married five years ago and have a four-year-old daughter. The accused often beat his wife while drunk. On Thursday, during one of these battles, he killed her. The crime was committed while their daughter was present at home.

The agency quoted the police officer as saying, “According to preliminary information, the couple had been married for about five years. The accused often assaulted his wife while under the influence of alcohol. On May 14, he beat his wife and inserted a saw blade into her reproductive organ. This brutality occurred when the couple’s four-year-old daughter was at home.”
He added that after committing the crime, the accused took his wife to Ambikapur Medical College Hospital after she lost consciousness and told the doctors that she had sustained injuries in a road accident, an official said. He added that the woman was declared dead at the hospital.

The official said that after hearing of his wife’s death as a result of the brutal attack on him, the husband fled the hospital, and the victim’s body was preserved in the morgue.
He said: “An autopsy was conducted on the body the next morning when her relatives arrived, and the husband was detained based on his report.”
After the autopsy, Dr. Santo Pag, an autopsy surgeon at the hospital’s forensic medicine department, said the woman was three months pregnant and had suffered about 17 serious external injuries to her body. Badd added that an iron rod-like object about 10 inches long was recovered from her genital organ.
The body was handed over to the police for forensic examination.
The police said that the accused was arrested on Sunday from Ambikapur and claimed that he had confessed to committing the crime.
