The deadline to file an income tax return is quickly approaching, and barring a government extension, failure to file by then could result in numerous penalties and complications regarding tax compliance.

Any delays after the July 31 deadline, omissions, errors, incorrect disclosures, or non-compliance could result in additional financial liabilities, including fees, interest, or penalties.
What are the main penalties to consider?
The Income Tax Department has been involved in different consequences for various defaults or irregularities in tax filing. While some penalties carry a fixed fee, others are linked to the amount of taxes involved.
Here are the five most common:
- Filing ITR after the due date carries penalty under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act. It can attract late fees of up to $5,000 ( $1000 if the total income does not exceed $5 lakh).
- Delay in filing a revised return will result in a Section 234-I penalty $1000 or $5000 depending on income
- If income is underreported or misreported, the authorities can impose a penalty under Section 270A. This penalty ranges from 50 percent to 200 percent of the tax due.
- If the person receives $2 lakh or more in cash in violation of the rules, penalty can be imposed equal to the amount received under Sections 269ST and 271DA.
- Failure to pay self-assessment tax can result in a penalty up to the amount of tax payable under sections 140A and 221.

Why file early?
Early filing of tax returns helps avoid penalties, unwelcome notices, compliance checks and stress later on. Filing early can give taxpayers time to carefully review their returns for errors and omissions that may have inadvertently crept in.
If the deadline is exceeded, it opens the door to deeper scrutiny by tax authorities, delayed refunds and other problems.
The Income Tax Department, through a recent post on its official handle X, also encouraged taxpayers to complete the process well ahead of schedule.
“3 Crore+ IFRs have already been submitted for 2026-27, with 15 lakh+ IFRs submitted yesterday alone! Don’t wait for the deadline rush,” the IT department wrote.
Filing accurate ITRs on time is one of the simplest ways to stay compliant with tax laws. Understanding applicable legal provisions and knowing the penalties for common defaults can help taxpayers avoid avoidable costs and ensure a smoother filing experience.
