Some protests turned violent, with reports of arson fires in some areas. The protests also caused traffic jams on roads leading to Delhi, with thousands of commuters remaining stranded, and long queues stretching for several kilometers on the Delhi-Noida border.

According to officials, a large number of workers from various industrial units gathered in the morning to press their long-awaited demand to review salaries and raised slogans during the demonstration.

Similar protests were also reported in Sector 62 and Sector 84, including at the Motherson corporate unit. The demonstrators also closed National Highway No. 9.

Noida factory workers protest against salary review: Highlights

  • The workers’ protests broke out in the industrial areas of Noida Phase II and Sector 60, and soon spread to other areas such as Sector 62 and 84. The workers were protesting for a salary review, a long-standing demand of factory workers in the area.
  • Police said the protests turned violent, vehicles were burnt, properties were vandalised, and stone pelting was reported from Phase 2 and Sector 60 areas of Noida.
  • Many workers spoke to the media and said their protest was aimed at improving wages. “We must win $20,000 for 8 hours of work. Alternatively, some companies give a raise of $280, or some other company gives $“$300 more,” said one of the workers. “Meanwhile, our rent is increasing by $500.” Another woman said it worked $13,000 per month.” > 12 hours a day for $13000 per month.

  • Delhi Police has issued a traffic advisory, stating that traffic in Noida has been severely affected due to ongoing disturbances by private factory workers. “They have completely blocked the Noida Link road coming from Chilla (Delhi) border.
