A man has been arrested for allegedly raping his 14-year-old stepdaughter multiple times in a village in Tripura’s Sipahijala district, police said on Saturday.

The 42-year-old accused was charged under Section 06 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and Section 64(f)(m)/65(1) 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at a local police station on Friday based on a complaint filed by a relative of the rape survivor.

The police said that the minor rape survivor told the complainant on May 19 that her stepfather had raped her several times and threatened her not to tell anyone about the incident.

The complainant filed a complaint with the police station on the same day, after which the police arrested the accused.

Last year, a total of 667 cases related to crimes against women were filed in Tripura, and 426 people were arrested.

Of the 667 cases, 168 were related to rape and 116 were related to sexual harassment.

The police found 298 people involved in rape cases and arrested 182 of them. 186 people were involved in harassment cases, while the police arrested 58 people.

In 2024, a total of 724 cases were filed related to crimes against women, including 180 rape cases followed by 108 harassment cases. The police arrested 204 people in connection with rape cases, while 60 were arrested on charges of sexual harassment.

In 2023, a total of 791 cases were filed related to crimes against women, including 139 rape cases followed by 151 harassment cases. The police arrested 186 people in connection with rape cases, while 69 people were arrested on charges of sexual harassment.
