At least four people were killed and 10 others injured after a bus lost control and crashed into a roadside tree in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, police said.

The accident occurred around 4 am on Saturday in Lakhijan area. The ten people who sustained injuries are undergoing treatment at Difo Medical College and Hospital.
The bus, carrying Ramadan pilgrims, was heading towards Dimapur from the Morigaon district, according to passengers.
One of the passengers said: “It was raining heavily and the driver lost control while crossing a sharp bend on the national highway. The car collided with a large tree on the side of the road,” adding that he lost consciousness after the accident.
Police said that a team went to the scene after receiving information about the accident. “Our team reached the site and joined the rescue operation. Other disaster response personnel have also been called in,” a senior police officer said.
Karbi Anglong police chief inspector Pushbraj Singh said four deaths were recorded and 10 people were taken to hospital.
He added: “We are conducting an additional investigation into the matter and the cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed. The process of identifying the deceased persons is still ongoing and we have contacted their family members to reach the scene of the accident.”
The deceased were identified as Abdul Barak, Khalil Rahman, Sabina Sultana and Alaluddin, all residents of Morigaon area. Police said the bus driver was among those killed.
“After initial identification, the bodies were sent to Difo Medical College and Hospital for autopsy,” Singh said.
