GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam further deteriorated on Tuesday as 21 more people died, while 5.64 lakh people were affected in 16 districts, an official bulletin said.
According to a late-night bulletin issued by the Assam Disaster Management Authority, the worst-hit Sivasagar district reported 13 deaths in the last 24 hours, followed by five deaths in Charedo, two in Golaghat and one in Jorhat.
These deaths bring the number of victims of floods in the state this year to 31 people.
Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he would visit the worst-hit areas from Wednesday to review relief and rescue operations.
“The recent Assam floods, caused by cloudburst upstream, have brought immense hardship to our people. Tomorrow I will visit the flood-affected areas and relief camps of Charedo, Nazira, Sivasagar, Sonari, Jorhat and Teok to review the relief operations,” he said in a social media post.
More than 5,64,600 people in Golaghat, Kamrup, Hojai, Dibrugarh, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Udalguri, Nagaon, Charadeo, Kamrup, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur and Sivasagar districts were affected by the deluge, ASDMA said, up from over 3.63 lakh people in 15 districts on Monday.
The bulletin said that 872 villages in 44 revenue districts remained submerged.
A total of 3,59,535 people were affected in Sivasagar, followed by 87,662 in Jorhat and 72,646 in Charideo, it added.
The bulletin stated that 71 relief camps housing 12,284 displaced persons and 202 relief distribution centers are currently operating.
The Dikhu and Desang rivers were flowing above the highest flood level in Sivasagar town and Nanglemuraghat, both in Sivasagar district. The Brahmaputra in Nimatighat, Brihdhing in Khuang, Dhansiri in Golaghat and Numaligarh were flowing above the danger mark.
Relief and rescue operations are being carried out by multiple agencies, including the Air Force, National Disaster Response Force, SDRF, and fire and emergency services, officials said.
They added that train services remained suspended for the second day in a row after floodwaters submerged railway lines.
Train services in Simaluguri-Namtiali and Simaluguri-Selenghat sections have been suspended due to severe floods in and around Simaluguri town in Sivasagar district, said Kapingal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Eastern Frontier Railway.
The NFR has cancelled, diverted or stopped several trains and is running additional special trains to help stranded passengers.
“These special additional trains will run till Friday and are expected to provide great relief to stranded passengers. Moreover, regular services of some other express trains are also running between Mariani and Guwahati,” Sharma said.
To ensure uninterrupted mobile connectivity in Sivasagar, Charadeo and Jorhat, the Telecom Ministry has activated domestic roaming service till July 24, the government said in a statement.
This facility will allow mobile subscribers to access services through any available telecom operator in case their own network is not available.
