The 2027 Census, the world’s largest census exercise, officially kicked off on Wednesday, with President Draupadi Murmu – India’s first citizen – exercising the option of self-census under the first phase of the process.
“The national census process began with the census conducted by the President of India, Smt. Draupadi Murmu, through the self-enumeration option, upholding the time-honored tradition of starting the national census with the first citizen of India,” a government statement said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also completed his self-census on Wednesday and appealed to citizens to participate in the census process.
“Today marks the beginning of the first phase of the 2027 Census, regarding listing of households and housing operations. This census is the first time that data is being collected through digital means. It also enables the people of India to self-enumerate their household details. I appeal to the people of India to self-enumerate their household details and participate in the census process.”

Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India Mritunjay Kumar Narayan also completed their self-census.
The self-enumeration process has begun in eight states and union territories, including Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Odisha, Sikkim, New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and Delhi Cantonment Board areas of Delhi.
About 55,000 families benefited from this facility on the first day, according to the government.
In Delhi, 1,000 people have started the self-enumeration process in NDMC and district council areas, and all of them have completed the process, an official said.
The self-counting phase takes place during the 15-day period prior to the start of the home listing process.

It is a web-based facility available in 16 languages where participants can fill in their details online before visiting the enumerator.
To participate, respondents can log in to se.census.gov.in and create a unique self-census ID, which will be shared with the enumerator during the subsequent field visit for confirmation.
The home listing process will begin on April 16 and continue until May 15.
