Violence broke out in West Bengal’s polling station Murshidabad district on Friday during Ram Navami processions, with incidents of stone-pelting, vandalism and arson reported from multiple locations.
The incident occurred after an argument over playing music when a large procession headed towards Mackenzie Park in Raghunathganj. The argument escalated into a clash between the participants and local residents, the Pakistan News Agency reported, citing officials.
At least 12 people were arrested and prohibitory orders were imposed in Raghunathganj town of Murshidabad district, police said. Several people are said to have been injured in the accident.
The incident broke out again near the Voltala crossing when the convoy reached the area, following incidents of stone-pelting, arson and vandalism.
Following the violence, tensions gripped parts of Murshidabad, while security was tightened in Jangipur and Raghunathganj districts.
The district magistrate issued prohibitory orders to prevent any escalation and maintain law and order in the sensitive area.
