Spain beat Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.
Spain won the match 1-0 after the match went into extra time. Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the match.
This is only the second time that Spain has won the tournament soccer Football competition. It also won the title in 2010 by defeating the Netherlands with a score of 1-0.
The match was also notable because it was the third time that Argentine star Lionel Messi had played in a World Cup final. He is the only man to achieve this feat.
The United States, which hosted many matches this year, qualified for the round of 16 before being eliminated by Belgium with a 4-1 loss.
Mexico and Canada also served as hosts for the 2026 World Cup, marking the first time in history that three teams have hosted the competition. The 2030 World Cup will not only be hosted by three countries – Morocco, Portugal and Spain – but it will also be held on three continents, also a first, with the opening three matches taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
The final was played on Sunday at MetLife Stadium (referred to as the New York New Jersey Championship Stadium), located in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The NFL stadium is home to the New York Giants and New York Jets.
