Kumar Sanu may have given countless Bollywood classics, but one of his most entertaining stories concerns music composer Anu Malik and his unexpected reactions during recording sessions.A video clip from an earlier episode of Kapil Sharma’s comedy show has resurfaced online, in which the veteran singer recalls how Malik would often leave him baffled with his outspoken criticism, only to shower him with praise hours later. In one such incident, Sano revealed that he always tried to give his best in the first take. However, this approach did not always receive immediate approval from the composer. “There were battles with Anu Malik for every song,” he said, as quoted by IANS.
I have a habit of trying to give 100 percent the first time. So I sang it for the first time. As soon as I sang it he said: “Disgusting!” What’s your problem? What’s wrong, Sano? What’s wrong?’.
I asked him: What happened, is there a problem? He said, You sing disgustingly. You are not in tune. Learn it once. ‘I gave it another chance.’What happened next left the singer even more confused. Despite Malek’s harsh reaction, the recording session ended without further discussion.
Recalling the episode, Sano said: “We were filming. He just got up and left the studio. I was standing at the microphone. The recorder said to me: ‘It’s done.’ Please come.” I kept my headphones on, and walked out of the recording room. I went home. At 11:00 pm, I received a call from Anu Malik.
“Bundka,” he said. He calls me Bondka. I said: Who is this? What’s wrong with you? He said: Yes. You did exceptionally well today. After seven to eight hours, I got a reaction from him.”This tale provided a glimpse into the creative dynamic between the singer and the composer, whose partnership has produced several Bollywood hits. Together, they have created evergreen songs including Tere Dar Par Sanam, Chura Ke Dil Mera, the title track of Baazigar, and many others that continue to resonate with listeners decades later. On the professional front, Kumar Sanu recently performed alongside his daughter Shannon K in a major symphony orchestra concert held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, adding another milestone to his celebrated musical journey.
