It’s safe to say that Bill Maher wasn’t laughing at Wanda Sykes’ joke directed at him at the 2026 Golden Globe Awards.

While presenting the award for Best Performance in a Stand-Up Comedy, Sykes quipped at the time: “There are some people who are mad that there’s a weirdo black woman out here doing the job of two regular white guys…but first I want to give them some love.”
She proceeded to roast the nominees in the category, including Sarah Silverman, Brett Goldstein, Kevin Hart, Ricky Gervais (who ultimately won) and Maher. “Bill Maher, you’ve given us a lot, but I like less. Just try less,” she said of the latter, who seemed to not know how to react when the camera panned on him.
At the end of the night, Maher apparently approached Sykes while they were waiting for their car. “He was like, ‘What was that?’ “It’s a joke, Bill,” she recalled. “He was like, ‘Well, I mean it wasn’t even a joke.’ And I said, ‘No, I heard the laughter. It was obviously a joke.'”
The comedian said that Maher continued to argue with her, prompting her to respond, “See? You’re doing exactly what we said in the joke. We need less of this. You’re summing up the joke. Less of this.”
“He didn’t care,” Sykes added. She also said at present The host told her he had been “getting a lot of texts” about the comment and that they thought it was a “stupid joke.”
“When he said ‘stupid,’ I said, ‘Okay, now you’ll get it,'” Sykes said. “I was like, ‘Okay, I’m getting a lot of text messages telling me how great it is, how they don’t like you, and it was really funny. I think that’s the problem. You’re watching Fox News, and I’m here on MSNBC. See?’ Then he asked me to be on his podcast. I said: “Not at all.”
