Vadivukkarasi’s horror drama ‘Granny’ is set to premiere digitally on Sun NXT starting March 6, after a modest theatrical run. The film, a nocturnal thriller exploring a village mystery and the murder of children, received mixed reviews for its lack of horror despite its strong premise. This OTT release aims to reach a wider audience looking for immersive horror experiences at home.
After a modest outing in cinemas, the horror drama “Granny” is preparing for a new stage in its journey. The film will begin airing on Sun NXT from March 6, giving it an opportunity to connect with a wider local audience.
Marketed as an intense nighttime thriller led by veteran actor Vadivukkarasi, the OTT release is expected to attract renewed interest for the film, especially among viewers who enjoy watching horror in a more immersive, personal space.
“Grandma” received mixed reactions in theaters
“Granny” opened in theaters on January 30 but was unable to generate strong word of mouth. The film opened to largely mixed to average reviews, and its box office performance remained limited. The general consensus was that the premise was good enough for a horror film, but it lacked the chills and thrills expected from a good horror film.
There’s been a lot of talk about the prevailing darkness and varying standards of CGI effects, as well as the lack of a scare factor.
With the failure of the theatrical release, the digital premiere is now crucial to the film’s arrival.
“Novelty” – cast, crew and technical team
Vijayakumaran, the director who earlier made Brahma.com, has written and directed Granny. Singampuli, Dhileepan, Gajaraj and Anand Nag, as well as GV Aparna, are all in prominent roles, along with Vadivukkarasi.
The technical crew includes cinematographer A. Manikandan, music composer Chelya Pandian and editor MS Gopi, while BBK Mahendran handled the art direction and Action Prakash choreographed the stunts. The main talking point was Vadivukkarasi playing an elderly character with a strong negative shade.
Story, horror tone, and reviews
Set over a single night in a village on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, the story follows two parallel paths: a police investigation into a series of brutal murders of children, and a family harboring a mysterious old woman in their ancestral home. As the night progresses, the connection between the woman and the crime begins to emerge. The film attempts to blend a popular ghost story with a thrilling crime story, but early reviews said that the scares were not as effective as expected and that the flashback portions added little to the impact.
With its arrival online, the film now hopes to find appreciation among viewers who prefer simple, slow-paced rural dramas at home.
