CNN is launching a new series of business interviews, with a new twist: People will be interviewing each other.
The satellite news channel launches what it calls it 1 on 1 with CNNwhere business leaders sit down with each other for what they hope will be useful conversations. 1 on 1 It will launch today on CNN’s live streaming platform, and will also be available on YouTube.
The first episode will feature a conversation between world-famous chefs and entrepreneurs Eric Ripert and José Andrés; With the second episode featuring Pinterest CEO Bill Ready and Venmo co-founder Ikram Magdoun Ismail. Future episodes will feature Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe, Sierra co-founder and OpenAI CEO Brett Taylor, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, and Accenture CEO Julie Sweet.
The show expands CNN’s presence in two places: As a digital-first series, it increases the value proposition of its subscription product, and as a business-centric series, it seeks to build affinity and authority in a space where CNN has ceded some ground in recent years. CNN has always covered business, of course, but as it has built out subscription segments, business has become a greater strategic priority.
“1 on 1 “It lifts the curtain on the strategy, decision-making and personalities of influential business leaders,” said Mary Beaudette, CNN’s vice president of business and media. “These refreshing live conversations provide perspective on the many obstacles to success and highlight how to overcome them.”
It’s also a format CNN has some experience with: last year the cable channel acquired some rights to the digital series Actors upon actorsWhich appeared for the first time on its platforms before becoming available on free services such as YouTube. This show, like 1 on 1forgets to have journalists lead conversations to get people to interview each other.
