A drama film by Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa Two prosecutorswhich Janus Films released in U.S. theaters earlier this year, will receive its premiere on the Criterion Channel on June 23.

Adapted from Georgi Demidov’s eponymous novel, set in the Soviet Union in 1937 during Stalin’s Great Purge, the film tells the story of a young local prosecutor and devoted communist who begins to question his steadfast faith in the regime.

Starring Alexander Kuznetsov, Alexander Filippenko, Anatoly Bely, Andris Kiss and Vytautas Kaniosonis, the film debuted at Cannes and was screened at the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival before being screened at the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival.

On the Criterion Channel, known for showcasing classics and discoveries from around the world, Two prosecutors I will accompany him Triala 2018 documentary that Loznitsa compiled from footage of a 1930 Stalinist show trial.

THR An excerpt from a longer interview titled “Meet the Filmmaker” produced by Criterion with Loznitsa on the occasion of the streaming deal for Two prosecutors. The full interview will be shown on the channel alongside the film.

In the exclusive clip below, Loznitsa explains how he first came into contact with Romanian cinematographer Oleg Mutu, whose work he admired on films such as Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or-winning debut at Cannes. 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days. Loznitsa and Mutu, who was born in what was then the Moldavian SSR, have worked together on numerous films, and the director explains why and how the director of photography’s sensibilities suited his first film so well.
