Travis Scott talks candidly about how Christopher Nolan cast him Odyssey.
During a Tuesday night appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy FallonScott recalls receiving an unexpected phone call from the Oscar-winning director, who asked him if he would be interested in starring in the Greek epic.
“My phone went off and he just said, ‘Chris.’ And I’m thinking, ‘Well, I don’t know what this is.’ Maybe he wants to go on the show?'” Scott said. “So I answered him and he said, ‘Are you interested in acting in a movie?’ And I’m like, ‘I mean, I guess, you know?’ What is it [role]””
Scott remembers Nolan telling him the movie was “coming out soon” and that he wanted him to be a part of it. “I say, ‘Hey, wait. Did you know I make music?'” Scott responded, surprised by the question, before Nolan presented him with his “whole thesis on why.”
“I’m really enjoying his time. He’s really inspired me. He’s a real mentor to me outside of this,” Scott said. Oppenheimer exit. So I say, “Whatever you like, I’m down.” “No matter what, I agree with it.”
Scott played Demodocus, the poet who narrates Odysseus’ journey in the opening scene and is the first voice and face the audience sees in the film.
Although he admitted, “I was actually nervous as F,” Scott said he initially assumed his scenes would be with extras.
“I didn’t know it was going to be Anne Hathaway, Tom [Holland] “And Robert Pattinson — a bunch of amazing people,” he said. “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. But they were an amazing team.”
Scott continued to praise Nolan and the cast for making it a comfortable experience. The duo previously collaborated on the soundtrack to Nolan’s 2020 film TenetWhich stars Pattinson.
“Chris is an amazing director, everyone made me feel comfortable. I was happy to be there and just watch it. And to be in such a world of them. So I’m happy to be here,” Scott said before adding the cast.
Nolan recently spoke with time magazine about why he chose Scott, saying, “I wanted to touch on the idea that this story was passed down as oral poetry, which is similar to rap music.”
In addition to acting, Scott also recorded the original song “When I’m Home.” OdysseyThe closing credits are by James Blake, with production by the film’s composer Ludwig Göransson. Nolan is credited as co-writer.
