'They are not original thinkers like Raj Kapoor': Shekhar Suman slams Bollywood filmmakers as 'formula plagiarists'

Shekhar Suman is back to what he does best, hosting a talk show. The actor has started his show ‘Shekhar Tonight’ on YouTube, with many celebrities and notable personalities in the guest list.

Amid the hype surrounding his show, the actor recently spoke about how the industry has changed over the years. He pointed out that people now depend on formula-based projects and do not want to experiment.

Shekhar Suman feels there is a lack of originality in today’s content

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Shekhar Suman, who has been part of the industry for over four decades, said, “Technically, we have become as good as anyone else in the world. But somewhere we lack that originality.”

“You have a group of actors who have a certain image to conform to, so they get stuck in this dilemma. And directors, due to financial pressures, are trying to find a formula,” he added.Shekhar Soman went on to describe new-age directors and actors as “plagiarists”. In the same conversation, he said, “There is too much reliance on formula. They are plagiarists, not original thinkers like K. Asif, Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt or Raj Kapoor. Their films have survived for almost 60-70 years.”

The 62-year-old actor said that he still watches ‘Ganga Jamuna’ and ‘Mughal-E-Azam’ still gives him goosebumps. “Kaagaz Ke Phool” or “Pyaasa” or “Mera Naam Joker” are classics because they were original,” said the show host.Speaking about the reason for the lack of originality, he added: “Today, what has changed is that there is a greater focus on making it work rather than making it more creatively beautiful.

This is not a good sign. We have to get back to being authentic and stick to our strengths and DNA. “This is very important.”More about Shekhar SumanShekhar Suman is currently hosting the talk show ‘Shekhar Tonight’.
