German writer and director Kai Stanecki (short films Gay goth scene, circleand step) attracted a lot of attention and enthusiastic reviews after the world premiere of his first feature film Hayne trial (Heimatlose Monastery) in the Perspectives section of the 76th Berlin Film Festival.
The film, which won a Teddy Prize jury prize and was widely viewed as an example of how Horizons can succeed in its mission of showcasing rising voices, tells a comeback story that raises all kinds of questions.
After 14 years on the mainland, Heine returns to where he belongs, the only village on a remote island in the North Sea. However, the close-knit community no longer recognizes him. Even his closest childhood friend, Friedman, distances himself from the visitor. Eventually, the island community holds a village court to determine whether Hein is who he claims to be or if he is an imposter.
The court hearings highlight how Hayne’s memories of his youth differed from those of various witnesses. as, Hayne trial It is a parable about memory, identity, and the tension between a sense of belonging and a sense of the constraints that living in a community brings.
Paul Busch plays Hine, and the cast also includes Philippe Junsch, Philippe Froissant, Emilia Scholl, Janet Hine, Sebastian Blomberg, and Stéphanie Amaryll.
