'The Odyssey' box office collection Day 1: Christopher Nolan's epic grosses Rs 20 crore debut; Records one of the biggest Hollywood openings in India

Christopher Nolan‘The Odyssey’ was a huge success before its release, registering a strong opening at the Indian box office.

The film, starring Matt Damon in the lead, matched its pre-release box office expectations to register an opening of Rs 20 crore in India. Despite receiving an Adults Only (A) certificate, the film still managed to emerge as one of the biggest Hollywood openers of the year.

According to sacnilk’s early estimates, ‘The Odyssey’ has grossed Rs 20.76 crore on the first day, with net collections touching Rs 17.40 crore after running across 8,413 shows nationwide. The film posted an impressive 48.7 percent overall occupancy, driven by demand for premium formats, especially IMAX screenings.

The English version of “The Odyssey” leads the groups

The film was widely released in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, however, it was the original English version that captured the lion’s share of the collections.Early language estimates suggest that the original English version of the film emerged as the front-runner, contributing an estimated Rs 13.75 crore nett to the film’s opening day revenues. The Hindi dubbed version followed with around Rs 1.90 crore, while the Telugu version earned around Rs 1.10 crore and the Tamil version added an estimated Rs 65 lakh.

The English-language release also saw the strongest audience response, recording nearly 70 percent occupancy across 2,113 shows.

In comparison, the Hindi version recorded around 10 per cent occupancy across 1,468 shows, while the Tamil and Telugu versions recorded healthy occupancies of 22 per cent across 227 shows and 25 per cent across 346 shows, respectively.

IMAX showings boost opening day numbers

As expected from a Christopher Nolan release, the large-scale performances prove to be a big draw. The film’s English-language IMAX 2D screenings recorded an impressive 73.86 percent occupancy rate.

With an estimated net opening of Rs 17.40 crore, ‘The Odyssey’ easily joins the list of biggest Hollywood shows releasing in India. The film currently trails ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, which has grossed a net revenue of around Rs 18 crore, and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, which has a net revenue of Rs 21 crore.However, trade analysts point out that the final first-day numbers still see a higher gross, with the film expected to close to the Rs 20-crore nett if late-night screenings and revised estimates are taken into account.

The opening is particularly notable given the film’s certification.

“The Odyssey” records strong advance sales

The film also benefited from exceptional advance bookings.With around 396,000 tickets sold in advance, The Odyssey ranks among the top four Hollywood advance sales in India, behind Deadpool & Wolverine (505,000), Avatar: Fire and Ash (474,000) and The Conjuring (443,000). It also surpassed “Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning” (248K).

Eyes debut movie Global box office

“The Odyssey” also began to hit the ground running internationally.

According to early projections at Deadline, the film is expected to gross around $50 million as of Friday and have a North American preview, paving the way for a $117 million three-day domestic opening.If these estimates hold true, the film will deliver the biggest opening weekend for Matt Damon as a leading star, and will also become the highest opening weekend for a live-action film in North America this year. The film will also become the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated film of the year, surpassing “Backrooms” ($81.4 million).The film is already Universal Pictures’ biggest opening weekend ever for an R-rated title, surpassing even “Fifty Shades of Grey” ($85.1 million).
