Don’t be sad that it’s over, be happy that it happened. Yes, Spotify has dropped the disco ball and changed its divisive app icon to the classic old app icon on iOS. Some users will be happy, while a few will be very sad.
The music player quietly reverted back to its original app icon on Thursday, and indications are that the disco ball was only intended to be a temporary thing to draw attention to Spotify’s 20th anniversary celebrations and content related to users’ “wrapped” nostalgia like the date they joined, the total number of songs they listened to, and the first songs they listened to — Adem’s “Bedside Table” in case you’re wondering how cool that is THR It was the opening shot of the writer — as well as the artist and most-streamed songs (as a playlist, of course).
Despite its impermanence, the disco ball sparked a significant amount of hate on social media, prompting Spotify to clarify that it was all temporary in response to a viral outbreak. Pop Crave tweet. “Okay, we know glow isn’t for everyone. Our temporary glow will be ending soon. Your regularly scheduled Spotify icon will be back next week,” the company tweeted on May 17.
However, the change didn’t come until about a month later, suggesting that this was either professional trolling by the company or, more likely, some kind of technological snafus as things changed back to normal. Some technology sites speculated on Thursday that the change had taken so long due to the need for a larger update to the Spotify app on iOS.
The social media furor is still ongoing at some sort of post, and the company has undoubtedly raised awareness of its 20th anniversary. As with the annual “Wrapped” campaign, personalized, shareable content about a user’s listening habits has proven popular for those who have moved beyond the gloss.
