The Danish girl is meGet theater therapy.
Benson Drive Productions began developing a musical adaptation of the novel, which was later made into the 2015 Academy Award-winning film, starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander. The production will feature a book and lyrics by Nora Brigid Monahan (Diva: Living from hell), an original score by Alex Parker, musical director of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s LW Entertainment, and directed by Georgie Rankum, UK associate director of Oh Mary!
The project’s first workshop will be held this week. The production schedule has not yet been announced.
Danish girl The novel and film are loosely based on the real-life story of Lili Elbe, a Danish painter, transgender woman, and early recipient of gender-confirming surgery, and her love story with her partner, Gerda Wegener.
The musical adaptation is “an exploration of the legacy of these two pioneers and their relevance almost a hundred years later.”
“I am delighted to be working with Georgie, Nora and Alex to bring them on board Danish girl To the theater. David’s historical novel has shaped queer literature by presenting one of the earliest fictional accounts of gender-affirming surgery and our musical works to continue honoring the great life of Lili Elbe with a predominantly transgender creative team. Transgender representation in the media is diminishing, but it is now more important than ever; “We hope this production not only elevates David’s iconic script and Lily’s profound legacy, but also creates a space for deeper understanding, empathy and connection between audiences in London, New York and beyond,” said producer George Strouse, CEO of Benson Drive Productions.
