The Cannes Film Market and Tokyo Film Festival content market TIFFCOM are teaming up to launch a new IP marketplace dedicated to Japanese IP.

The inaugural Japan Intellectual Property Market will take place from May 15-17 in conjunction with Marché and will bring together major Japanese rights holders and international producers and buyers of film and television adaptations. Participants include Amuse Creative Studio, producers of local Oscar-nominated films CocohoKadokawa Company (Suzume, your name), Shochiko (Driving my car(and Tui)Demon Slayer: Infinity Fortress) as well as other leading Japanese IP including Nihon Bungeisha, Nippon Animation, and Shufu To Seikatsu Sha.

The market will be held from Friday to Sunday at the Art Explora catamaran located at the Vieux-Port in Cannes, and will include pitch sessions, individual meetings and seminars, including a presentation on “

“The Future of Japanese Intellectual Property in Global Adaptations” from Tetsuo Fujimura, executive producer of the hit Netflix live-action series one pieceadapted from the hugely successful Japanese manga.

Japan is this year’s country of honor at the Cannes Film Market.

“Japan is known as the birthplace of some of the world’s strongest intellectual property rights, from manga and anime to novels, remakes and video games. This new initiative will create further opportunities to strengthen international cooperation,” said Guillaume Esmeul, Director of Marché. “At the same time, it reinforces the growing importance of IP in the film market, which has been a key strategic focus for several years.”

The film industry in Japan, especially the animation department, is booming. The annual Anime Industry Report, published at TIFFCOM last November, showed 15 percent growth across the industry, which has revenues exceeding $25 billion in 2024. And that was even before the recent historic success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Fortress.

Yasushi Shina, CEO of TIFFCOM, said the Cannes market is “the perfect environment to highlight and showcase the extraordinary adaptability and creativity of Japanese content across multiple formats and markets. By bringing together key players from Japan and around the world at Cannes, we aim to create new opportunities for business and international growth.”
