Susan Sarandon talks about where her film and TV career currently stands and why she’s not working as much.

The Oscar-winning actress — who was dropped by United Talent Agency in November 2023 after making controversial statements about the war between Israel and Gaza — shared an update on her career during a discussion on February 27, via ReutersThis was before he received the International Goya Award at the Goya Awards ceremony organized by the Spanish Film Academy in Barcelona.

“My agency fired me, specifically for marching and speaking out about Gaza, and for calling for a ceasefire,” Sarandon said. “It has become impossible for me to even appear on television. I don’t know in recent times if it has changed. I have not been able to do any big film or anything related to Hollywood.”

I know this Italian director who just hired me – he was told no To hire me, so this is still recent. He didn’t listen, but they had this conversation. Right now, I kind of specialize in smaller films with directors who have never directed, in independent films.

Sarandon also weighed in at one point during the discussion, expressing her gratitude to the Spanish and Irish leadership for their frankness in their support for Gaza, compared to the United States.

“In a place where you feel oppressed and censored, seeing Spain and seeing the president and what he’s saying and the support he’s giving on Gaza, and having actors like Javier Bardem stepping up with such a strong voice, is very important for us in the United States,” she said. “When you turn on the TV and see how strong Spain is and how clear your moral stance is on these issues, it makes you feel less alone and makes you feel like there’s hope because of all of you and the fact that you don’t hear that on TV in the United States. You don’t know that exists.”

the Dead man walking The actress added: “When someone stands up that strongly, when a nation stands up, and I include Ireland in this as well, I can’t tell you how much it means to those of us who are trying in a very difficult atmosphere when we see that kind of strength and moral clarity, and how much that means to us.”

After Sarandon made controversial remarks at a pro-Palestinian rally in New York City’s Union Square in November 2023 amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas, she was dropped by her talent agency, UTA. She later issued a statement saying she was “deeply sorry” for her comments at the time.
