Stephen Colbert has found his afterlifeLate show job.

The comedian has been tapped to write a new story Lord of the Rings The film, alongside Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee, will be the second of two upcoming films in the blockbuster series. Colbert joined Peter Jackson to announce the news on social media on Tuesday night.

“The thing I found myself reading over and over again were the early six chapters of the Fellowship book [of the Ring] “They never evolved into the number one movie of the day,” Colbert said in the video (below). “It’s basically chapters from ‘Three Is Company’ through ‘Fog on the Barrow-downs,’ and I thought, Oh wait, maybe this is its own story that could fit into the larger story. Can we make something that’s completely faithful to the books and at the same time completely faithful to the movies that you guys have already made?

He continued, “And I started talking about it with my son Peter, who is also a screenwriter, and we worked to come up with what we thought would work, especially as a framing device for that story.” “It took me a few years to gather my courage into a pile to contact you, but about two years ago I did. You liked it enough to talk to me about it, and since then, the two of us have been working with the wonderful Philippa Bowens on how to develop this story.”

Colbert, a lifelong Tolkien fan, added that the team at Warner Bros., including Pam Abdi and Mike De Luca, “loved it” as well.
