Spotify has laid off about 3 percent of employees at its streaming group.
Monday’s layoffs affected 15 jobs across The Ringer and Spotify Studios. The changes are described as improving the unit’s execution and speed, not as a matter of cost-cutting, according to a person familiar with the matter. The company is expected to continue investing through both Spotify Studios and The Ringer.
The source said the layoffs were generally intended to flatten the unit’s structure and give creative leads more direct control.
“Spotify does not comment on hiring transitions,” a Spotify spokesperson said when asked for comment.
As part of the layoffs, Ranger Podcast New York, NY with John Jastremski You will finish. Andrew Gruttadaro, head of special projects at The Ringer, and writer Myles Surrey, wrote on social media that they had been laid off from their jobs.
“It’s impossible to sum up nine years of work in a tweet, but: I’ve worked on so many things — profiles, topic weeks, special projects — that I’m incredibly proud of,” Grotardo wrote on X.
Spotify has been increasing its overall user numbers, reporting 751 million monthly active users last quarter, an increase of 38 million, representing the largest number of net additions in Spotify’s history, and is aggressively pushing its video streaming strategy, including signing a deal with Netflix.
