Libertad said she hopes the LUX Prize will help “focus the deaf community, the diversity of people in Europe, and promote inclusion policies that improve their living conditions.” She said she is confident that society is “changing its view of diversity,” considering it not a “problem” but a source of “human wealth.”

Irish producer Mike Downey, who served as honorary chair of the award’s selection committee, said there was a strong sense of “social and political responsibility” between the committee, the European Parliament and the European film industry to use great European cinema “as a means of spreading truths about democracy and the world we live in. Long live European cinema.”
