Filmmaker-designer Rhea Kapoor, sister of Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor, is at the center of a jewelery theft case after diamond earrings worth Rs 1.35 crore went missing from her makeup artist’s handbag.
The incident reportedly occurred around the time of her trip to New York to attend a high-profile fashion event, and a case has now been registered with the police.

What exactly happened?
According to Mumbai Police, the jewelery was rented from two jewelers in Mumbai specifically for the event and was found missing only after the team reached New York. Sahar Police Station in Mumbai has registered a case against an unidentified person under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and has initiated a formal investigation into the matter as reported by IANS.Rhea Kapoor was invited to attend the Met Gala fashion event in New York on April 29, and her entire team traveled with her, including makeup artist Savleen Singh, who has worked with her for the past seven years. For the event, two pairs of expensive earrings were rented from Mehta Jewelers and Goenka Jewelers in Mumbai, and Savleen Singh carried the two jewelry boxes in her handbag throughout the trip.The team began their journey on April 27 at 10:25 pm, on an Emirates flight from Mumbai to Dubai before continuing on to New York.
They arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport on the evening of April 28 around 5:30 p.m. and later checked into the Pierre Hotel in New York.
Find empty jewelry boxes
When Savleen Singh opened the jewelry boxes in her hotel room to hand over the earrings to a team member named Shirin, she discovered that both boxes were empty. The missing items included emerald stone gold stud earrings from Mehta Jewelers worth Rs 66 lakh and Zambian emerald stone gold earrings from Goenka Jewelers worth Rs 69 lakh, taking the total value of the jewelery stolen to Rs 1.35 crore.
An FIR has been registered and investigation is underway
After returning to Mumbai, Savleen Singh lodged a complaint at Sahar police station, following which an FIR was registered under Section 303(2) of BNS on charges of theft. Police officials confirmed that the case was registered based on her complaint about the earrings she had rented for Rhea Kapoor’s appearance in New York.Investigators are now reviewing the entire travel schedule, from the Mumbai airport and the flight to the hotel accommodation in New York, to determine whether the theft occurred at the airport, during the flight, or after the team arrived in the city.
