‘SNL’ Alum Kevin Nealon slams cast members who break down during sketches: ‘It doesn’t work’

former SNL Star Kevin Nealon isn’t a big fan of seeing current cast members bursting into laughter during sketches.

While the comedian and actor did not directly name any of the actors, his comments came after a recent episode of the NBC comedy series that saw host Ryan Gosling and featured player Ashley Padilla breaking character multiple times.

“I’ve never broken a character on SNL,” Nealon wrote on

“If I can get through a Chippendales sketch, I can get through anything,” he added, referring to the popular Season 16 sitcom with Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze.

However, when they read the notes out loud, they realize that they are actually embarrassing notes about themselves.

What caused Gosling and Padilla to constantly burst into laughter was the fact that the notes had been changed since rehearsal, leaving them amazed at what they were about to read.

The next day, Padilla took to her Instagram Story to thank the writers behind the sketch for the humorous moment. “Thank you to Mikey, Streeter and Alison Gates for absolutely destroying me on live TV,” she wrote, adding: “PS Gosling is the funniest person on the planet.”

Although it was planned during this show, there have been countless other times SNL Cast members have broken character over the course of 51 seasons.

As for Nealon, he hosted the “Weekend Update” segment on the program from 1986 to 1995.
