Shilpa Shetty Kundra recently gave a candid look at how the film industry has radically changed. The actress talked about her eclectic approach to work, her desire for a theatrical release, and why she has no regrets about the big films she turns down.
She believes the industry is currently at a crossroads, with many filmmakers increasingly preferring the safety of OTT platforms over the unpredictability of theatrical releases.
Shilpa Shetty says the producers don’t want to take any risks now
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Shilpa Shetty said, “The industry is going through a period of stagnation as well because they prefer not to take responsibility or risk and just offer streaming over the internet. I don’t blame them. The whole mathematics of making a film, the cost, all that, has changed.”
Shilpa Shetty talks about why she is more selective about her projects
Having successfully balanced films, television and entrepreneurship over the years, Shilpa Shetty says she has reached a point in her career where she is no longer ready to settle down. “I don’t want to compromise too much on what I want to do because I’ve been there and done that for a very long time. I want to justify it when I’m seen on screen,” she said.During the conversation, she also talked about why she wanted a big screen release.
“My kids haven’t seen me in the theatre. That’s why I want to do a film that gets a theatrical release. My son saw Sukhee in 2023, but it was in the preview theater. I hope I get something similar to the films we used to make earlier,” the actress said.Reflecting on her 2023 film ‘Sukhee’, the actress expressed her disappointment over the limited theatrical release. She explained, “Sukhee was released at a time when we did not have enough theatres.
This was a disservice to the film. But OTT is a great platform because people can discover the film at their convenience. Now I am aiming for a film that will be released in cinemas, so my children can watch me on screen.”
Shilpa Shetty talks about rejecting big films
Shilpa Shetty, who now hosts the cooking reality show ‘Maa Hai Na’, said that 2026 will be a busy year on the professional front. She also addressed rumors and questions about the projects she rejected, explaining that she stands firmly by every decision she makes.
She said: “This year a lot is happening in terms of work. While I am aiming for a theatrical release, the length of the role was not the norm for me. There were instances where I said no, and my reasons were completely justified – they were my reasons.”
There are some big films that I refused to show, but that’s between me and the producer. Why should I talk about it? “I have never regretted my decisions.”Meanwhile, the actress was recently seen in the Kannada film ‘KD: The Devil’, starring Dhruva Sarja and Sanjay Dutt. It was released in April this year.
