The late-summer TV calendar just got a little rougher: FX has scheduled the premiere of Splinters.

The drama, based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis and produced by Ryan Murphy, is set to premiere August 5 on FX and Hulu. The premiere date is the culmination of a winding road Splinterswhich Ellis initially developed at HBO in 2024. It stalled there before being rescued by Murphy and FX in May 2025; A serial order followed two months later.

Ellis posted Splinters in print form in 2023 after first being released as a serialized audiobook on his podcast. The novel is set in Los Angeles in the 1980s and is inspired by Ellis’ high school days. Here’s how FX describes it: “The series follows a group of privileged high school students at an elite prep school as they navigate the identity, sex, jealousy, obsession, and dangers lurking beneath the surface of American adolescence.

“At its center is Brett (Egby Rigney), an aspiring writer and deeply committed teenager, whose reality begins to unravel with the arrival of a mysterious and attractive new student, Robert Mallory (Homer Gere). Transferring just before his senior year, Robert’s emergence coincides with the growing terror of The Trawler, a serial killer targeting teenagers across the city.”

The cast also includes Kaia Gerber, Hayes Warner, Graham Campbell, Evan Rachel Wood, Wes Bentley, and Jordan Roth.

Twenty TV produces Splinters. Executive producers are Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Ellis, Erik Kovtun, Scott Robertson, Nessa Diederich, Tanas Popa, Nick Hall, Michael Uppendahl, Max Winkler (who also directs), Kathleen McCaffrey and Brian Young.
