In Riteish Deshmukh’s view, the success of Hindi films like ‘Dhurandhar’ demonstrates a major cultural shift. Audiences are increasingly drawn to innovative storytelling. He encourages creators to break free from traditional templates, stressing that the richness of Indian cinema lies in presenting captivating stories, regardless of genre.
Riteish Deshmukh said that Indian cinema cannot be limited to one format after the success of ‘Dhurandhar’ and ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’. The actor-director, who is gearing up for the release of his historical drama Raja Shivaji, said filmmakers should remain aware of the changing tastes of the audience, but should not assume that only one style of storytelling will work.
He added that the Indian audience remains broad and open to different genres of films when the story connects.
Riteish Deshmukh talks about changing Indian cinema
According to Bollywood Hungama, Ritesh spoke about the shift in cinema while discussing Raja Shivaji’s film. Responding to the impact of Aditya Dhar’s ‘Dhurandhar’ films, he said, “I think one has to be really aware of the changes that are happening around them. You can’t blind yourself to the changes. And when something really works, something great like Dhurandhar or Dhurandhar The Revenge, there is a different story, different stories, narration style, different approach and a new hero… a new kind of hero.”

‘Raja Shivaji’ movie release and cast details
Ritesh added, “If there was a particular film, I think it would be really limited on our part to think that only this kind of story or this kind of thing will work.

So, if you look at the films that have really succeeded… When Chhaava came, no one thought he would do this kind of work for the genre. He said that these films proved that the audience accepts many types of cinema. “So, at the end of the day, all these films have set standards for themselves, and this also proves that, look at the bigger picture,” he said.“Raja Shivaji” features Riteish as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He also directed and co-wrote the film, which will be released on May 1, 2026.
