A surprise standalone episode of “The Bear” has dropped on Hulu, and it’s not something fans of the show were expecting. The episode titled “Gary” is a flashback following Richie, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Mickey, played by Jon Bernthal, on a business trip to Gary, Indiana. The episode arrives without fanfare and appears as its own separate title rather than as part of “The Bear’s” catalogue, a detail that Moss-Bachrach himself pointed out when he announced it on Instagram.
What is “Gary” about and who made it
According to the episode synopsis, “Gary” follows the complex relationship between the two friends, “revealing new layers of Mickey’s mental state while providing crucial insight into the man Richie was when audiences first met him in Season 1, adding emotional context that reframes their story from the beginning.”What makes the episode especially special is that Moss-Bachrach and Bernthal co-wrote it themselves, while series creator Christopher Storer stepped in to direct it. Announcing the episode on social media, Moss-Bachrach wrote, “Cousins! Primus! Cogennie!!! Get ready Gary!!!! We’re so excited to finally share this little adventure with Richie and Mikey.”
With my pen and [Bernthal]. Directed by Christopher Storer. This dream was a reality. Thank you to the people of Gary, Indiana, and as always Chicago, Illinois.”As of now, the episode is outside of the streaming service’s usual viewing hub, meaning viewers will have to search for “Gary” directly to find and watch it.
What does this mean for the bear? Season five
“Gary” arrives ahead of Season 5 of “The Bear,” which has no official release date yet but is widely expected to be released in June, in keeping with all previous seasons of the show. Season 5 is also expected to be the final chapter of the series. While no official comment has been made on the matter, the guest star will recur
Jamie Lee Curtis
He has said as much on multiple occasions.
For fans who have been following Richie and Mickey’s relationship since the first episode, “Gary” offers a rare and welcome opportunity to spend more time with two of the show’s most complex characters before the story reaches its conclusion. Outside of “The Bear,” Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach have previously appeared together in the “The Punisher” series as well as their recent Broadway role in “Dog Day Afternoon,” making their creative partnership in “Gary” a natural and much-welcomed reunion for fans of both actors.
