Remo D'Souza, Liesel's wife, talks about having her first child out of wedlock and then marrying three times: 'I didn't believe in it'

Remo D’Souza and his wife Liesel have been married for 25 years and have two sons. While Remo has carved a niche as one of the best choreographers in the industry, he has also turned director with films like ‘Faltu’, ‘ABCD’ and more.

In a recent interview, Remo and Liesel spoke about their love story as they also opened up about his journey. The couple revealed that they were living together and had their first son out of wedlock. Remo shared that his parents were not aware of his relationship with Liesel, while she revealed that her father strongly disapproved of it. At a time when live-in relationships were still considered taboo, the couple chose to move in together without informing their families.

Liesel, who was only 20 years old, got an opportunity to work as a flight attendant, but gave it up after Remo expressed his discomfort with long-distance relationships.

“My mom knew I was madly in love with him,” she said during a chat with Curly Tales, adding: “So I left my house and we started living together.”To avoid confrontation, Liesel told her parents that they had married in secret, “which wasn’t true.”

Things took a dramatic turn when she became pregnant, a fact they initially hid. Remo remembers the moment his mother unexpectedly discovered the truth. When she saw Liesel, she asked, “Oh pet se hai? (Is she pregnant?)” Leaving Remo speechless, she turned to his father and said, “Dekho tumhare bete ne kya kia hai (See what your son did).”

Reflecting on how they reached parenthood before marriage, Liesel admitted: “It just happened with the flow and we both didn’t realize it.

When you’re 20, you don’t realize it. I only have this excuse. By then, her mother had also discovered that the previous claim of a secret wedding was not true. After their son was born, her parents insisted on a proper wedding in a church so that the child could be baptized. “My son was born and my parents said you need to baptize him. They (the church) don’t take mandir ka shaadi (temple wedding). You have to get married in the church to baptize your son, so you have to decide whether you want to baptize him or not.”Despite this, it took some time for Liesel to agree to the marriage. “It took me three months. He convinced me. Everyone convinced me after my son was born,” she said. “I said: ‘Mereko na bharosa nahi hai (I don’t have faith).’ He said if we get married in the church and register our wedding, I won’t be able to do anything,” she added. Remo added: “She was afraid, and she no longer trusted me. I told her: What more do you want?” We have a child. I am ready for marriage wherever you say.

Even after becoming a mother, Liesel admitted that she would often return to her parents’ house when things went wrong. “Anytime anything happened, I would run to my mother’s house and go to sleep. My mother would say to me: ‘What are you doing here?’ Your son is at home. You have to come back. Then I come home,” she said, noting that during this time, Remo stepped up as a hands-on father. When asked if their son was present at their wedding, the couple smiled and confirmed that he was present. In fact, they ended up marrying not once, but three times, in a Christian ceremony, a Hindu wedding, and later, a vow renewal on their 20th wedding anniversary. Remo humorously recalled the reason behind the second ceremony, saying that someone told Liesel that men with a double crown marry twice, which prompted her decision. “She said I would only marry you twice,” he said, laughing.Today, Remo and Liesel have been together for over 25 years, raising two sons, Dhruv and Gabriel, with a story that is as unconventional as it is ongoing.
