Rajpal Yadav spoke about one of the most talked about phases of his life – his imprisonment and the controversy surrounding the Rs 5 crore debt issue. In a recent conversation, the actor addressed public perception, industry support, and the reality behind the headlines. The conversation began with a reference to Nawazuddin Siddiqui who once described Rajpal as a “kind-hearted” person who kept his kitchen open for struggling actors. In response, Rajpal told Shubhankar Mishra: “I will speak from the heart. There are many things I have done that I will never talk about publicly – because the moment you talk about them, their value is gone.”He added: “There are two types of assistance: the type that people know about, and the type that remains hidden.”
“There is no one who is not with me”
In response to questions about whether people stood by him during his difficult phase, the actor stressed that he always had support.“In the last 25 years… from my village to Mumbai, there is no one who does not stand with me,” he said, adding that his long career in itself is evidence of the industry’s support.Rajpal also noted that he has worked in more than 250 films, saying, “There is no producer, director or actor who has not called me back for work… If the industry was not with me, how could I have done so many films?”
“It wasn’t a matter of lack of money.”
One of the most common public perceptions – that an actor with such a huge filmography should have easily shelled out Rs 5 crore – has also been addressed.
“That is exactly the question… The day people understand this, they will understand my whole case,” Rajpal said, hinting that the matter is much more complicated than it seems.Speaking about his time in prison, the actor explained, “I wasn’t imprisoned because I didn’t have money. It was about a bigger issue and a matter of principle.”Had the problem been only around Rs 5 lakh crore, he added, “it could have been resolved in 2012 itself,” claiming that the issue eventually led to losses of Rs 17-22 lakh crore.

The film was lost and the release was halted
Rajpal also spoke about the film project that was at the center of the controversy, revealing that a major portion of it had already been completed before things got worse.“Rs 12 crore has already been spent…it has become a Rs 22-crore project,” he said, adding that the film’s release was stalled.“Even if enemies are involved in a project, they should allow it to be released. The public should decide,” he said.Responding to the fraud allegations, the actor said: “In the film industry, out of 100 films, 20 are hits and 80 are flops…
If the film fails, it does not mean that fraud has been committed. He stressed that setbacks are part of the job and should not be misinterpreted.
“This fight I didn’t start.”
Despite the long legal battle, Rajpal stressed that he has confidence in the system. He said: “I respect the judicial, legislative and executive authority… and I have complete faith,” adding: “I did not start this battle, but it will end because of me.”Concluding his remarks, the actor urged people to look beyond superficial narratives.“There were a lot of misunderstandings…just listen to the whole story,” he added, adding that he was simply presenting his side.
