Riteish Deshmukh’s historical epic Raja Shivaji has made a strong impression at the box office since its release on May 1. The film, which was shot on a grand scale and revolved around the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, has grossed an impressive Rs 33 crore during its first three days, attracting huge attention across Maharashtra.Amid the success of the film, Riteish revealed interesting behind-the-scenes details, as several actors chose to be a part of the project without charging any fee. “This Marathi film has got the highest number of shows in Maharashtra. We have read all the books; the history of Maharaj is not something that can be contained in one film. Our mission was to show this film without compromising the history. Salman Khan is my brother, he was in both the films. I have been working on writing the film for three and a half years.”
All the major actors worked for free on this film; “Everyone worked for free at Maharaj,” revealed Riteish Deshmukh as quoted by Mid-Day.

He further talked about the wider reach of the film, adding, “We have telecast this film in Hindi and Marathi. Summer vacations have started and this is a good opportunity for all family members and young children to get information about Maharaj from this film.”The film features an ensemble cast, with Salman Khan making a special appearance as Shivaji Maharaj’s loyal bodyguard Jeeva Mahali.
