There are times when we forget to live in the now and appreciate what is in front of us and around us. Instead, we focus too much on the future and what will and won’t happen, knowing all the while that we have no control over life.
George Harrison of The Beatles touches on this in today’s quote and talks about how important it is to stay in the present.
Quote of the day by George Harrison
“It is our being here now that is important. There is no past, and there is no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All that exists is the present. We can gain experience from the past, but we cannot relive it; we can hope for the future, but we do not know if there is a future.”This quote from Harrison was shared during his interview in the 1987 television documentary, “That Was Twenty Years Ago Today.”
The documentary was produced to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary of their album “Sgt.” Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
What does quote mean?
The Beatles’ lead guitarist said this quote to emphasize the importance of living in the present moment. “Being here now is what matters. There is no past and no future,” he cites, reveling in the fact that all you need to care about is the now.The past is already past, and there is nothing you can do about it.
As for the future, while some choices may dictate what happens next, it is still up to you to understand yourself and not focus so much on what is about to happen that you forget what you have now.He adds: “Time is a very misleading thing,” noting that there will be moments when time feels like it is moving quickly, while at other times you will feel that it is moving very slowly. However, there is no difference.
This again links to the concept of being in the present moment. The only moment you can experience, breathe or act within is now. Then he concludes by saying: “We can gain the experience of the past, but we cannot relive it. We can hope for the future, but we do not know if there is a future.” This means that the past is there to ensure that you learn from your mistakes and know what went wrong; However, you also remember that it is over, it has already been done, and that learning is all you can gain from it.
Furthermore, he talks about the future, stating that the one thing you must understand about the future is that you can hope it will go your way, you can only imagine that things will go well and be fine, and yet, you have no control over what will happen, even in the next millisecond.Overall, Harrison speaks to a philosophy about how important it is to appreciate your present and the people and things in it. Since the past is over and you can’t do anything about the future, the here and now is the only thing that truly matters.
