Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing for what will be their first family visit to the UK in four years. Emerging details about their accommodations have sparked significant speculation about where they might choose to stay during their time in Britain. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to arrive in the UK in July with their two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5. The trip has been in development for some time, with Harry set to take part in events marking the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, which will take place from 10 to 17 July 2027.
Althorp House and Princess Diana’s ancestral property
Interest has focused on Althorp House, the Spencer family’s ancestral estate in west Northamptonshire, about an hour’s drive from Birmingham.
The property’s official website states that it will be closed to the general public on July 10 and 11. These details have sparked widespread speculation among royal watchers and the media about whether Prince Harry and his family may visit or potentially stay there during their scheduled trip. The property holds deep significance for the family beyond its historical and architectural significance.
Princess Diana, Prince Harry’s late mother, was buried within the grounds of Althorp Park, specifically on an island located in the middle of an ornamental lake known as The Round Oval within the royal pleasure garden. This special location ensures that the burial site remains protected from public view although the wider estate welcomes visitors during the regular season. The timing of their visit carries additional symbolic weight.
The family’s July arrival will come shortly after Princess Diana’s July 1 birthday, a date that held deep meaning for Harry throughout his life. Additionally, Princess Lilibet’s middle name honors her late grandmother, underscoring the personal significance of any potential visit to Althorp.
Prince Harry’s previous residence at Althorp House
Harry has a history of staying at Althorp during his visits to Britain. The estate belonged to his uncle Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer.
Most recently, Prince Harry used the property as a residence in August 2024 when he returned to the UK to attend the funeral of Lord Robert Fellowes, a figure who had great meaning in his life and family history.
King Charles III offered royal residence
Meanwhile, sources indicate that King Charles III, 77, has made an offer to his youngest son, Prince Harry, and his family to stay at one of the royal properties during their potential visit. However, according to the report, no official response has been received to this offer from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at the present time. This represents a continuation of previous hospitality initiatives shown by the King. On previous occasions, Prince Harry was offered residency at Buckingham Palace, although he declined those invitations. The offers were repeated, indicating that King Charles was trying to facilitate the visit and show willingness to help his son return to Britain.
The issue of safety remains unresolved for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
One of the challenges in planning a visit is the issue of security.
Although King Charles III can provide accommodation on royal grounds, the Home Office, not the monarchy, is responsible for deciding on the level of protective security. No additional security details were provided for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s visit. The Duke of Sussex, who has been without taxpayer-funded police protection since he and Meghan left their official royal roles in 2020, continues to object to the arrangement.
His close family has repeatedly asserted their right to safety in the United Kingdom and has filed lawsuits against the royal family over this, citing troubling reasons. In his statement to the High Court in December 2023, Prince Harry made clear his views on the importance of the UK to his family’s identity and well-being. “The United Kingdom is my home. The United Kingdom is central to my children’s heritage and a place where I want them to feel at home as much as they want to feel where they currently live in the United States,” he said.
“This cannot happen if there is no possibility of keeping them safe when they are on UK soil.”He also emphasized the broader implications of the security situation. He added: “I cannot put my wife in danger in this way, and given my life experience, I am reluctant to put myself in harm’s way unnecessarily as well.” The security question has become a constant obstacle to the family’s comfort and readiness to visit Britain.
Prince Harry and former King Charles III meet
Despite ongoing tensions within the wider royal family, Prince Harry and his father were able to meet during recent visits to Britain. Most recently, they reunited at King Charles’s London residence on September 10, 2025 while Harry was in the country to attend the Well Child Awards and events related to the Invictus Games. Their private meeting lasted 55 minutes and marked their first face-to-face conversation in 19 months. This meeting, although short, seems to indicate a modest improvement in relations between the two men. However, no plans for a similar reunion have been confirmed during the upcoming July visit.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s previous visits to Althorp Cemetery and Princess Diana
The last time Prince Harry and Meghan Markle brought their children to Britain was in June 2022 to attend Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee celebrations, although Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet did not participate in public events.
The couple extended their stay after the Queen’s death in September of that year to attend her funeral and related celebrations. In his 2023 memoir “Spare,” Prince Harry gave a deeply personal account of bringing Meghan Markle to visit his mother’s grave for the first time in 2022, describing the emotional and spiritual significance of that moment for both of them.“Visiting this place has never been easy, but this is…the twenty-fifth anniversary.
And Meg’s first time. “Finally, I was bringing the girl of my dreams home to meet my mother,” Harry wrote of his wife’s paddle to the memorial site. “We hesitated, hugged, and then I went first. I laid flowers on the grave. Meg gave me a moment, and I talked to my mother in my head, telling her I missed her, and asking her for guidance and clarification.”Harry continued his narration, paying special attention to Meghan’s moment at the grave.
“I felt that Meg might also want a moment, so I went round the fence and examined the pond. When I returned, Meg was kneeling, with her eyes closed, and her palms on the stone.”Returning to the boat, Harry asked his wife what was on her mind during that special moment. “As we walked back to the boat, I asked her what she prayed for. She said: Clarity and direction.”His thoughts on that visit suggest that any return to Althorp during their July trip will hold great meaning for the whole family. The upcoming visit represents a continued effort by Prince Harry to maintain and strengthen ties with his homeland, despite the complexities that still surround such visits.
