Peter Capaldi talks about the backlash to ‘Doctor Who’.
Speaking to The Times, Capaldi – who played the Twelfth Doctor – addressed the criticism surrounding his casting choices.Whittaker made history as the first woman to play the Doctor, while Gatwa became the first black and queer actress to take on the role. Their casting marked a major turnaround for the long-running series, which first aired in 1963.Commenting on the backlash, Capaldi said the show is always evolving over time. He said: “It reflects its time, which is a good thing in the world, even though it has become a bit big, too important for the BBC or anyone else. When I was a kid and I watched it, it was just a monster show in the corner of the room. I don’t know why people take it so seriously.”Gatwa, who plays the current Doctor, faced racist and hateful remarks online after his casting was announced.

Pour backlash Beyond “Doctor Who”
Gatwa was not the only actor to face such reactions recently. With a new Harry Potter series in development, Papa Essiedu has been cast as Severus Snape, a role previously portrayed by Alan Rickman in the films.Following the announcement, Essiedu faced backlash online, with some criticizing the casting choice. Addressing this issue earlier this year, he said he was choosing to channel negativity into motivation. He told The Times: “It’s really important. The truth is, if I look on Instagram I’ll see someone saying: ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you’. So, while I’m pretty sure I won’t get killed… it might age me badly! But, yes, while I hope I’ll be OK, no one should have to face this while doing their job.”
