Oscar Eustis, the Public Theater’s longtime artistic director and a prominent player in the theater world, will step down after 23 years at the helm.
Eustis, who has overseen the creation of Tony Award-winning shows including Hamilton and Fun house At the Off-Broadway Theater, his contract will not be renewed after it expires on July 31, 2028, the audience’s 60th anniversary.
“I have long hoped that my 70th birthday would be the right moment for me to pass this wonderful theater on to the next generation, and I believe the perfect time has already arrived. The theater has come through the storm of the past six years with its mission intact, strong, and thriving, having survived COVID, social unrest, and the worst crisis American nonprofit theater has ever faced.”
He continued: “Our board of directors, staff, and artists are strong and united around our mission; our audience is strong and hungry for our work; and the audience is ready to face new challenges with all the integrity and creativity they have demonstrated for more than 70 years.”
The Public Theater Board, chaired by Louis A. Miranda Jr. (Lin-Manuel Miranda’s father), has formed a search committee this fall, with the goal of naming a successor next year.
In addition to the first show Hamilton In 2015 and developing Fun house In 2013, Eustis’ tenure at The Public included a revival of the 2009 Tony Award-winning film. hairIn addition to winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, among them Hamilton In 2016 and He sweats in 2017. He also developed several other groundbreaking plays and musicals, many of which then went on to Broadway and extended runs including Strange passage, Here lies love, It is enough, Brother/sister plays,The Hobo Trilogy, eclipse, Manhattan, Fortress of isolation, Soft power, The Intelligent Gay’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with Key to the Bible, There’s no mo, I miss you like hell, pretty little things And more.
However, despite the prominent position enjoyed by the Public Theater in this area, and the money gained from developing major productions such as… Hamiltonthe theater had to make cuts and rethink programming during the pandemic, as theaters were closed, and right after they reopened, as audiences were slow to return to many nonprofit theaters. Eustis had to oversee that, as well as work toward his goal of supporting new artists and making programming accessible to the public, as was the mission of the theater’s founder, Joe Papp. The Public Theater also runs Shakespeare in the Park for free, among many other programs.
