Netflix has been named a Competitor at the Cannes Film Festival Black ball (La Pola Negra), Featuring Penelope Cruz and Glenn Close in supporting roles THR The deal, brokered by CAA Media Finance and Goodfellas, was confirmed on Saturday.

The Spanish-language film, directed by Javier Ambrosi and Javier Calvo, the creative duo and former spouses, known in their native country as Los Javes, had its world premiere in Cannes on Thursday evening to thunderous and prolonged applause.

La Pola Negra It is the creative duo’s first feature since 2017 Holy camp! It tells the story of three men in three different periods – 1932, 1937 and 2017 – linked together by the latest works of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca.

Elastica will release the film in Spain in October, and co-producer Le Pacte will release it in theaters in France.

“The film is a meditation on so much lost gay history, an acknowledgment of what it must have been like for men in a dangerous and oppressive era to find themselves helplessly drawn to each other, war and other atrocities that fuel their lives but fail to destroy what is so strong and innate within them.” THRReview noted. “Los Jafes executes this mighty vision with thrilling technical courage. Almost every shot in the film is a carefully composed marvel, either a striking still-life painting or a breathtaking bit of camera movement, all done in rich, extravagant period detail. It is a film of dazzling assurance, offering the intense satisfaction of seeing something ambitious actually descend into its own nervous attempt. One comes to festivals like Cannes in part to witness the arrival of major new filmmakers; Black ball It is just such an event. Los Javes moves deftly and gracefully between timelines and knows when to add a sly, surprising joke, lest the scene turn into a mystery.

The competitive sale comes on the heels of another major bidding competition for Jordan Firstman’s Kid Clubwhich A24 ended up acquiring.
