After release Nirvana band movie presentation In the US, Neon has acquired the domestic rights to Matt Johnson’s upcoming film, Hollywood Reporter I’ve learned. Johnson will direct the project, currently known as Matt Johnson’s untitled filmwith Finn Wolfhard set to star.
The story is inspired by true events that saw the editor of Vice Canada recruit drug mules for an international cocaine smuggling operation, including out of the offices of the media giant. Wolfhard will play the Canadian investigative journalist who helped uncover the story.
Neon will release the film in the US and will handle international sales outside of this year’s Cannes Film Market.
Department M is executive responsible for producing the film. Matthew Miller and Matt Grayson will produce for Zapruder Films, in association with Rhombus Media. Telefilm Canada is helping fund this feature.
Johnson, repped by WME, directed the critically acclaimed film BlackBerry It was last in theaters with Nirvana band movie presentationwhich is based on his Canadian television series of the same name. His other credits include independent features Filth and Avalanche processwhich premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Next, he’s directing an Anthony Bourdain film Tonystarring Dominique Cessa, will be released by A24 this summer. Johnson is also developing a Magic: Gathering Feature film about the legendary.
Wolfhard, who worked with Neon in his directorial debut Summer hellrecently ended its run on the Netflix juggernaut Strange things. He is repped by CAA, Venture Entertainment Partners and Jackoway Austen.
For its part, Neon will screen several films from the Cannes Film Festival, including competition titles paper tigerJames Gray’s latest features Fjordthe family drama from Sebastian Stan and Renate Rainsvi.
