Rumors about Mithun Chakraborty and Sridevi’s relationship have persisted for decades, with speculation ranging from a secret marriage to an eventual breakup. While neither Mithun nor Sridevi has publicly confirmed their marriage, senior entertainment journalist Jyothi Venkatesh has now revisited the claims, alleging that the two briefly lived together as husband and wife.Speaking to Indian Rush, Venkatesh claimed that the actors shared a home life for a short period.“If you’re asking if they had a close relationship, they had been living together as a couple for about three months,” he said.
“Everyone knew they were together.”
Recalling the outdoor shoot, Venkatesh said he witnessed that phase himself.“I went to an outdoor shoot for Mithun. Sridevi would never come to the sets. She would stay in the room, but everyone knew they were together,” he recalls.The veteran journalist also engaged in a light conversation with Mithun at that time.“Mithun was a good friend of mine. I even joked with him and said, ‘Mithun sir, you must have learned Tamil by now.’ He immediately understood what I was insinuating and said, “Please don’t speak to me in Tamil.” Just ask me how I’m doing. The reference was of course to Sridevi.”
Why did the alleged relationship not last?
When asked why the relationship ended, Venkatesh pointed to compatibility problems and the circumstances surrounding the two stars at the time.
“There were compatibility issues. Also, at that point, Sridevi was Sridevi. Mithun was a successful actor, but Sridevi became a phenomenon.”He also added, “Mithun had been through different relationships before this, so people at that time felt that he could not really be trusted in a relationship.”However, Venkatesh pointed out that Mithun’s marriage to Yogita Bali eventually stood the test of time.“Even when Yogita Bali married after divorcing his first wife, Helena Lok, not many people thought the marriage would last.
But now they have been married for many years. They have three sons and an adopted daughter.”
Long-standing rumours
Although Mithun and Sridevi never confirmed their marriage, rumors about their relationship first surfaced in the late 1980s. According to long-circulating reports, the two met during the shooting of Jaag Utha Insaan in the early 1980s, where their on-screen chemistry is said to have blossomed into a real-life romance.Several reports over the years have claimed that the two actors secretly married in 1985 and remained together until 1988.
However, at that time, Mithun was already married to Yogita Bali, whom he married after divorcing his first wife, Helena Lok. It was also said that the alleged affair created a major crisis in Mithun and Yogita’s marriage.Reports also claimed that Sridevi eventually ended the relationship after realizing that Mithun would not leave his wife. She later married producer Boney Kapoor in 1996, and the couple had two daughters, Jhanvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor, both of whom are now actors.Neither Mithun Chakraborty nor Sridevi have publicly confirmed the reports, and the alleged marriage has remained a subject of speculation for decades.
