the first The devil wears Prada It was a huge hit after its release in 2006. Meryl Streep knew it would be, which is why she doubled her salary when she was first offered the role of the now famous Miranda Priestly.
Now, 20 years later, Streep has revealed the bold (but worthwhile) negotiation move to talk about The devil wears prada 2 With sequel co-stars Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.
“I read the script [for the original]The scenario was great. “They called me and made an offer, and I said, ‘No, I’m not going to do it,'” Streep said during an interview Wednesday with PBS. today. “I knew it was going to be a big hit, and I wanted to see if I could double my order…and they immediately went and said, ‘Sure.’ I thought, ‘I’m 50-60. [years old] – It took me a long time to understand that I could do it! I felt like they needed me. I was ready to retire. “That was a lesson.”
The original film grossed more than $325 million worldwide at the box office, with praise pouring in for the cast. Streep won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as the icy editor-in-chief of the top fictional fashion magazine. Runway (Inspired by Vogue magazineEditor-in-Chief Anna Wintour). Behind-the-scenes talks about a sequel began as early as 2009.
“They started talking about a sequel, but we all waited until we had this good idea,” Streep said. “I think we all had to do it too, we all had to come back,” added Blunt, who plays Emily Charlton, Miranda’s first assistant in the original film. “There have been mutterings and grumbles for years.”
“Lots of ideas,” Streep continues. “But it feels like the world had to turn out this way for Allen [Brosh McKenna] …to get a new idea that makes sense. They had to face what was happening in the world of journalism, publishing and politics. Everything has kind of flipped. Which is cool, that this had a story built into it.
And that’s how the great idea sparked The devil wears prada 2which will be released in theaters this weekend after 20 years. All four stars reprise their roles. But things have definitely changed. What sets the sequel apart is that Hathaway’s character, Andrea “Andy” Sachs – Miranda’s former second assistant – returns to… Runway In the midst of a changing era of media and journalism.
“AI and technology have changed, not just the physical thing, but journalism itself, and that’s obviously where the movie starts,” says Tucci, who plays Nigel Kipling, Miranda’s right-hand editor.
“Everyone in their lives has had to navigate the new reality and figure out how to survive, how to keep their scruples intact, how to keep their conscience awake and alive,” Streep says of reuniting with these characters at a time of great uncertainty for the industry. “[All the characters do] It’s done in a different way, and there are a lot of compromises that people make, and yet, it comes together and it’s kind of a triumph in the end.
Hathaway says she was sold on the sequel as soon as she read the script by Allen Brosh McKenna, who also wrote the 2006 original. In her script, McKenna described Andy Today by saying that “20 years had done nothing to dull her heart or her intelligence.”
“Aline McKenna has solved this problem and found a reason why we can go beyond just nostalgia, beyond just giving people what they want,” says Hathaway. “You found something new and more to say with these characters, so I felt like that took a lot of pressure off. Then we went back to what we were doing every time.”
In her conversations with McKenna and director David Frankel, Hathaway and the pair talked about Andy being less outgoing in the sequel. “She never gets sarcastic, which is one of my favorite things about her,” Hathaway adds. “She sees the best in situations, and the best in people.”
She says Andy stands by her choice to stay away from him Runway At the end of the first movie. “She knew this was the right choice for her. It wasn’t easy. He didn’t have some of the financial success that other people her age might have had. But she enjoyed being herself, and now she’s looking for something else. I think she’s looking for some stability,” she adds.
While filming the sequel, Streep says she was able to spend more time with the actors this time around. She took a more methodical approach with the original, keeping her distance to maintain just the right amount of mystery (and fear) around Miranda. But this time, Streep says, “We came in[and]Miranda was more disturbed.”
Meanwhile, Blunt says Emily has not softened over time, and is happy to play someone who is “in a constant state of rage.”
She adds of Emily, who is now an executive at the fashion house Dior: “There’s going to be some kind of downturn that has to happen for all of them. But I adore playing her. I think she’s completely crazy, obviously. But I find her kind of delicious and fun. I think as it is now, she’s kind of crazier because she’s got the power.”
However, Streep still maintains her love for the series.
“Everyone has their origin story when they saw it,” she says of the first film. “It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also kind of confusing.”
