Marcia Lucas, the editing expert behind some of the biggest blockbusters, including “Star Wars,” “American Graffiti” and “The Return of the Jedi,” has died.
She was 80 years old at the time of her death.
Marcia Lucas dies at the age of 80
News of her death was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, which received an official statement from her family. “Marcia will be remembered as a remarkable storyteller, a pioneer for women in film, a loving mother and grandmother, a gracious hostess, and a loyal friend whose sense of humor and brilliance filled every room she entered,” the statement read. “Her impact on film is indelible, but those who knew her best will remember the way she made life more vibrant, more beautiful, more fun, and full of love.”
“It was revealed that she died peacefully at her home in Rancho Mirage, California, on May 27. The report also confirmed that the Oscar-winning editor died of cancer.
Who was Marcia Lucas?
Lucas was born in California and began her career as an editor in the 1960s. After obtaining an apprenticeship with a prestigious organization, Lucas was assigned to edit many of the promos and commercials released at the time.
She worked directly under film editor Verna Fields, who had worked on films such as Jaws and Steven Spielberg’s first major film, The Sugarland Express.While working on the documentary Journey to the Pacific, she met her husband, George Lucas. The two have continued to work together on plenty of projects over the course of their careers. The BAFTA award-winning editor has worked on many films and other projects over the course of her career, and has also informally assisted her husband on many of his projects. She is survived by her daughters, Amanda Lucas and Amy Soper.
