“All summer, I was a housekeeper for a wealthy Saudi man, who I gradually realized was the lover of a member of the royal family,” Roselet Ruiz shares in press notes for the film. “The couple were illegitimate and should never have been seen together. But the difference with the situation of Syria in the film is that there were employees. When someone entered, we concealed our presence (and therefore hers) by locking ourselves in one of the wings of the apartment. There was the idea of taboos, and of course very clear power relations. The interior aspect of the film enabled me to imagine a real meeting between these two women, which reality did not allow.”
