“Hello, hello, hello,” Valerie Cherish says as she opens double doors at the opening moment of the new trailer for her new movie. Return. “Welcome to my new chapter.”
It’s actually the third and final chapter of the HBO Max comedy series starring and co-created by Lisa Kudrow, which returns on March 22. From Kudrow and Michael Patrick King, the eight-episode season once again focuses the lens (and reality TV cameras) on Cherish as she prepares for another comeback, this time in a new TV show titled How is that?!
“Sitcoms are back,” Shirish declares. “How is that?! This is the display name. Such a good hook too. You know? Because you can say that in so many different ways. How is that?! How is that?!”
hook for Return The new season finds Shirish, now an executive producer of her show-within-a-show, discovering that the sitcom was written by artificial intelligence. “You won’t have to deal with any wacky writers,” says Dan Bucatinsky’s Billy Stanton, referring to the first season in which Cherish regularly clashed with a head writer. “It’s written by artificial intelligence.” “Oh. Wow. This is new,” Shirish said.
It’s another sign of how to do this Return It reflected the current cultural landscape from the beginning, like how the first season dropped in 2005 at a time when reality TV was in its infancy before it took over Hollywood. King and Kudrow executive produce alongside John Melfi and Dan Bucatinsky. After downloading the weekly episodes, which continue through the series finale on May 10, Kudrow and King will sit down with host Evan Ross Katz for an official accompanying video broadcast on HBO Max. The podcast will also feature special guests from and outside of the cast.
