Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino Return for ‘Romy and Michele’ Sequel with a Mix of Original Stars and New Cast

The return of Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow as Romy and Michele is official — and heading straight to streaming.

Hollywood Reporter 20th Century Studios has confirmed a sequel to 1997 Romy and Michele meet in high school Filming began on Friday and is now in production in Los Angeles with director Tim Federle (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) on top. But unlike the first installment, which hit the big screen as a theatrical release, the sequel will stream exclusively as a Hulu Original on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the US or on Disney+ internationally.

The original film, penned by Robin Schiff and directed by David Mirkin, starred Sorvino and Kudrow as Romy and Michele, two inseparable air captains who hit the road to their 10th high school reunion with a plan to lie about their successful careers to impress their classmates. Schiff, whose credits include Emily in Paris and Grosse Pointealso wrote the sequel that brings back some of the original stars along with a new group of actors to join the party.

Back: Janeane Garofalo as Heather, Alan Cumming as Sandy Frink, Camryn Manheim as Toby, and Julia Campbell as Christy. They will be joined by Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Heupel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham. Their roles are being kept under wraps as is the plot of the new film.

Federle is also producing alongside veteran producer Laurence Mark, who produced the 1997 film Romy and Michele meet in high school. The executive producing team includes Barry Kemp (executive producer on the original), Sorvino, Kudrow, and Schiff. Kimberly McCullough is named associate producer.

Rounding out the creative team are director of photography Marco Fargnoli, production designer Hilary Gortler, editor Brian Olds, and costume designer Mona May, the latter of whom put her stylish spin on the beloved original after a culture-changing party in 1995. ignorant. For 20th Century Studios, Vice President Sarah Shepherd is overseeing the project.

The original film, produced by Touchstone Pictures and released by Disney’s Buena Vista Pictures, was a modest hit (barely) by earning $29 million when it was released in April 1997. But like many comedies of the era, it found new life in popular culture by becoming a cult classic. It is currently streaming on Hulu. Fans have been clamoring for a sequel for years, and that fever intensified after Sorvino and Kudrow reunited to present the trophy at the SAG Awards in 2022.

But it wasn’t reported until January 2025 that Sorvino and Kudrow were in final talks for a sequel with Federle. While making the rounds for the final season of ReturnKudrow has hinted that it’s getting closer and closer. Federle is repped by CAA. Kudrow, who just wrapped up his notable run as star, executive producer and co-writer of Returnis repped by CAA, Viewpoint, and Gochman Law Group.
